Visitors to the HyLife Centre, splash pad or new playground on Arena Street in La Broquerie will soon have a giant new seat to take a break.

Council approved the arrival for one of the big red chairs sprouting up in parks and small towns across Canada. The oversized Adirondack chair is in storage until a base is built near the intersection with Normandeau Bay, according to Reeve Ivan Normandeau.

He expects the chair to be sitting at its new home in the next couple weeks.

“It’s going to be a basic base so it won’t be that expensive. I think it’s a win-win for everyone,” said Normandeau.

The federal government is paying for the chair itself.

The reeve sees the new landmark as a way for locals and travellers alike to showcase La Broquerie. The federal program started over a decade ago and put over 200 chairs made of recycled plastic in national parks, but has spread.

“A lot of small towns, especially in southern Manitoba, are getting these chairs. It’s another place to have a photo-op,” said Normandeau.

“There’s no logic to it. It’s the matter that they’re all over Canada and we’re just keeping up with the trend.”

The location was chosen after a thorough discussion by the LUD (local urban district) over a couple months, with the full council approving it at its June 21 meeting.

“That’s the most travelled area in La Broquerie we’ll say for rec, and for people taking walks. Over the years I think it’s become a place where people take pictures,” said Normandeau.

“It’s a good area and seen by a lot of people. Our rink is very busy in the wintertime, and the baseball diamonds with the splash pad is very busy. There’s a lot of walking; it’s by both schools, Arborgate and the French school, so it’s an ideal location.”
